Accessing the Traverse County Court Docket Online
The MCRO portal at publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us is the primary way to search Traverse County court docket records. This statewide system covers all 87 Minnesota counties and lets you search by name, case number, or attorney name without creating an account. When searching, you can narrow results to Traverse County specifically so you aren't seeing cases from other counties in the state.
The portal includes four main tools. The Case Search finds cases by party name or number. Document Search lets you look up and download public PDF documents by case number. Hearing Search lets you find scheduled court dates for a case or party. Judgment Search covers money judgments entered in civil cases. All four tools draw from the same statewide court database and cover Traverse County cases along with all other Minnesota counties.
For older records filed before July 1, 2015, document access through MCRO is limited. The register of actions may still show case history, but actual filings may not be available online. For those records, contact the Traverse County courthouse directly. MNPAC terminals at the courthouse give more complete access than remote MCRO access for certain older records.
Traverse County Court Docket Record Types
The Traverse County District Court handles the full range of trial-level case types under Minnesota law. Criminal cases cover everything from traffic offenses and misdemeanors to gross misdemeanors and felonies. Civil cases include contract disputes, tort claims, and small claims through conciliation court. Family cases cover divorce, child custody, child support modifications, and adoption proceedings. Probate and guardianship matters are also part of the court docket. Each case type has its own coding in the MCRO system.
The docket for each case is a register of actions. It lists every event in the case with the date and a short description. You can follow the life of a case from initial filing through any appeals by reading down the register. For civil cases, you will see the complaint, service of process, answers, motions, and final judgment. For criminal cases, the register covers charges, arraignment, bail, motions, plea or trial, and sentencing.
Some records are not public. Juvenile delinquency cases, civil commitment proceedings, orders for protection, and harassment restraining orders are all restricted from public MCRO access. Sealed records and expunged cases also do not appear. These limits apply statewide under court rules.
Copy Fees and Record Requests
Since July 1, 2023, uncertified copies of Traverse County court records are free. You can print or download them from MCRO at no cost. Certified copies, which carry the court seal and signature, cost $14.00 each. An exemplified and certified copy is $28.00. These rates are set under Minn. Stat. § 357.31.
You can request copies in person at the Traverse County courthouse on 702 2nd Ave N in Wheaton. Bring the case number and a description of what you need. For mail requests, send a written request with the same information plus a check or money order to "District Court Administrator" at the same address. Call (320) 563-4270 to confirm fees and processing time before sending a mail request.
Court Access and Legal Resources
The Minnesota Judicial Branch provides resources statewide through mncourts.gov. This includes the court fees page at mncourts.gov/Help-Topics/Court-Fees and information on self-help centers where available. The Eighth Judicial District page provides resources specific to western Minnesota counties including Traverse.
For criminal history background checks, use the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension at chs.state.mn.us rather than MCRO. The BCA system uses fingerprint verification and produces certified results suitable for employment screening. MCRO is a docket lookup tool and is not designed or certified for background check purposes.
Under Minn. Stat. § 13.90, the judiciary operates under its own data access rules separate from the state's Government Data Practices Act. The court administrator's office can answer questions about what specific records are available in a given Traverse County case. If a record is sealed, restricted, or otherwise unavailable online, they can let you know your options for accessing it through other means.
