Which Court Handles Eagan Cases
Eagan does not have its own municipal court. Like every other city in Minnesota, Eagan relies on the county district court system. The Dakota County District Court handles all civil, criminal, family, probate, and traffic cases involving Eagan residents. This is true regardless of the case type or how serious the matter is. If someone was charged with a crime in Eagan, sued in a civil dispute, or filed for divorce, the case sits in the Dakota County docket.
The Dakota County District Court operates three service locations. The Judicial Center in Hastings is the main courthouse. The Western Service Center in Apple Valley is the closest location to Eagan residents. The Northern Service Center in West St. Paul covers northern parts of the county. All three locations have public access terminals connected to the state docket system and staff who can assist with records requests.

How to Search Eagan Court Docket Records
Minnesota Court Records Online, or MCRO, is where you search Eagan court docket records for free. The portal is at publicaccess.courts.state.mn.us. No sign-in is needed. The system runs four separate search tools, and most people start with the case search.
Go to the Case Search and type in a party name or case number. Set the county filter to Dakota County to keep results focused on Eagan cases. Results show the case number, the names of all parties, the filing date, the case type, and the current status. Click into any result to see the full register of actions, which is a line-by-line log of every filing, every order, and every hearing from start to finish. That register is the core of the court docket, and it is free to view.
Two other tools are worth knowing. The Hearing Search lets you look up cases scheduled for a specific date. If you want to attend a public hearing or confirm when your own case is set, this is the right tool. The Judgment Search shows money judgments entered in civil cases. This is useful for attorneys, creditors, and researchers checking for outstanding judgments against a party. There is also a Document Search for locating specific filed documents within the MCRO system.
Note: MCRO does not show every case. Juvenile records, sealed files, and records restricted under Minn. Stat. § 13.84 are not available in public searches. Contact the court administrator at (651) 377-7180 if you believe a record you need is restricted and want to request access.
What the Eagan Court Docket Contains
The Eagan court docket is not a separate system. It is the Dakota County docket filtered to cases connected to Eagan. Every case type heard in the district court appears there. Civil cases cover contract disputes, small claims, property matters, and civil judgments. Criminal cases range from petty misdemeanors to felonies. Family cases include divorce, legal separation, custody and parenting time, child support, and name changes. Probate handles estates, guardianships, and wills. All of these case types share the same docket format and are accessible through MCRO.
For each case in the docket, you can see the assigned judge, the parties involved, the case number, the filing date, and the full register of actions. The register is the most detailed piece. It lists every document filed in the case, every hearing that was scheduled and whether it was held, continuances, and all rulings and orders. If a judge issued a restraining order, finalized a divorce, or handed down a sentence, that appears in the register. This level of detail makes the docket a reliable source for legal research, due diligence, and public accountability.
The Dakota County court page on the Minnesota Judicial Branch site provides contact details for the Judicial Center and both service centers.

Getting Copies of Eagan Court Records
Viewing the Eagan court docket online through MCRO is free. You can read the register of actions, check case status, and look at hearing schedules at no cost. That handles most common needs. If you need an actual document from the case file, fees apply.
Uncertified copies are free as of July 1, 2023. Certified copies cost $14.00 per document. Exemplified copies, which carry a triple seal, are $28.00. These amounts come from Minn. Stat. § 357.31. Reports up to 50 pages cost $5.00. Reports over 50 pages are $25.00 per additional 50-page block. A certified judgment search is $5.00. Fax requests for up to 50 pages cost $25.00.
You can request copies in person at any Dakota County service location. The Western Service Center in Apple Valley is the closest to Eagan. Mail requests go to Dakota County Court Administration, 1560 W. Highway 55, Hastings, MN 55033. Include the case number, the names of the parties, and payment. Some documents may also be available for direct download through the Document Search in MCRO, which can be faster than submitting a formal request.
Legal Resources for Eagan Residents
The Minnesota Judicial Branch runs Self-Help Centers at courthouses across the state. Staff can help you find forms, understand filing requirements, and navigate court procedures. They don't provide legal representation or give legal advice, but they are a practical first stop for people handling their own cases. The Self-Help Center at the Dakota County Judicial Center is available during regular court hours.
If you need more than form-finding help, legal aid organizations serve the Dakota County area. Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid and Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services are two resources that may assist qualifying individuals with free or low-cost legal help. Ask at the Self-Help Center for referral information or contact the court administrator's office at (651) 377-7180.
For criminal history records beyond what the court docket shows, use the BCA Criminal History Search run by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. That system is not the same as MCRO. Both are useful but serve different purposes, and they may not show identical information. The BCA system is the proper route for official background check purposes.
The Access Case Records page on mncourts.gov explains what is public and how to request records that are not available online. Minn. Stat. § 13.90 governs public access to court data statewide. If you need to expunge a record, see Minn. Stat. § 609A. Expunged records do not appear in public MCRO searches.
Note: MCRO is not designed for background check purposes. The BCA Criminal History system is the correct tool for that use.
